The house we made an offer on turned out to have a huge plumbing problem (a leak in or under the slab). The seller initially said that he would only allow $1000 for any repairs, but this will be a multi-thousand dollar repair, according to the plumber we hired to test the system, on the advice of the house inspector. Apparently, houses that are 50 years old or more have cast iron pipes that were meant to last about 50 years or so. This house has also settled and the foundation has been somewhat repaired in places.
The seller is now saying that he will have his plumber look into seeing how much repairs will be, but not until Tuesday, the day before our option period is up. He asked if we would extend our option period, which we will do, but not at any additional cost to us. He also tried to rope us into paying for part of the plumbing repairs but of course we said no. We've already made it abundantly clear that we have no extra money to give him. He cannot sell the house in that condition, unless he finds someone who has a lot of money to pour into the repairs. The rest of the house is great, and he's a contractor, so he shouldn't try to cheap out.
We also looked at another house today, in case we have to opt out of the other one. It's great as well, but more expensive and smaller. It's on our side of I-35, so it would be much easier to sell, when we decide to get rid of it in the future, and it's a court-ordered sale, which could take a while to go through, giving us time to save up $$ a bit.
Choices, choices.......maybe the choice will be made for us next week.
